Early Detection Program: Prostate Cancer

Prostate cancer is the most common malignant tumour in men in the European Union, although it is very rare before the age of 50. In 90% of cases it occurs in men over 65.

Advances in imaging techniques and early detection programs for prostate cancer now make it possible to diagnose the disease in early stages in more than 70% of patients.

The Prostate Center of the Clínica Universidad de Navarra is the first in Spain to offer the entire diagnostic and therapeutic arsenal for the management of benign and malignant prostate pathology. It carries out an early diagnosis program for those over 50 years of age. These programs are of vital importance since, on many occasions, prostate cancer does not produce symptoms and is detected in routine check-ups.

A multidisciplinary approach, with the joint or sequential action of the specialties involved (urology, radiology, pathology, radiotherapy and medical oncology), is the ideal scenario for guiding and treating the patient.

Diagnosis and treatment of Prostate Cancer at the Clinica Universidad de Navarra

The main measure for the early detection of prostate cancer is a medical examination in which a digital rectal examination and a blood test including the determination of prostate-specific antigen are performed.

If the digital rectal exam shows an enlarged prostate or the test shows an elevated PSA, a prostate ultrasound is indicated.

Prostate biopsy is a definitive method of diagnosing the disease

It is a confirmatory diagnostic method for prostate cancer and is carried out with ultrasound assistance. A device is incorporated into the ultrasound probe through which a long, thin needle is inserted to perform the puncture and biopsy.

The prostate samples are sent to the specialist in charge of analyzing and studying the tissues, the anatomopathologist, who, after studying them, makes the diagnosis, confirming whether or not there is a cancerous condition.

Prostate cancer treatment includes surgery, external beam radiation therapy, brachytherapy, hormonal treatment and active surveillance when the parameter of life expectancy is taken into account.

In the Clínica Universidad de Navarra we treat a large number of patients with interstitial brachytherapy with excellent results, achieving control of the tumor in 95% of the cases.

In our center, interstitial brachytherapy implants are performed in a chirofanized CT that performs the surgical procedure and the implant with maximum safety and excellence.

As for the surgical treatment, the Clinic has pioneered the use of robotic surgery for prostatectomy, which brings great advantages to the patient.
