Mohs Surgery

What is Mohs surgery?

Mohs surgery, also known as microscopically controlled surgery, is a highly specialised surgical treatment for skin cancer that provides a high cure rate compared to other more traditional techniques.

This type of surgery is based on the removal of the neoplasm, with the lesion being verified by histological examination before the skin defect is closed. The treatment of skin cancer is the simple removal of each of the lesions.

In some cases, for example, in large neoplasms that have evolved for a long time, or in those in which there have been several local recurrences due to incomplete excision, this surgery is required.

How is Mohs surgery performed?

Removal of the tumour

The tumour is removed and not sutured (covered with gauze). The aim is to leave it open pending histological confirmation by the pathologist that the tumour margins are free of tumour.

Tissue analysis

The excised tissue is fixed with paraffin and the specialist analyses it to verify that the margins are free of disease. During this process, the patient is admitted to the hospital to await the results (36 hours).

Entrance to the operating theatre

Once the specimen has been analysed, the patient returns to the operating theatre. If the tooth had free margins, the first wound is closed. If there were any remains, the affected area is excised again.

Final examination

While the patient is still in the operating theatre, in about 30 minutes, the pathologist re-examines the excised tissue and checks again whether the tumour has been completely eradicated and the wound can be sutured.
