Mohs Surgery
"The overall procedure is slow and sophisticated and requires highly specialized personnel. The Dermatology Department of the Clinic has a great deal of experience in this type of technique".

What is Mohs surgery?
Mohs surgery (microscopically controlled surgery) is a highly specialized surgical treatment for skin cancer that provides the highest cure rate compared to traditional techniques.
The treatment of skin cancer is the simple removal of each of the lesions. In some cases, such as large neoplasms with a long evolution time, or those in which several local recurrences have occurred due to an incomplete removal, the so-called "Mohs surgery" is required.
This type of surgery is based on the removal of the neoplasm, and it is proven that the lesion has been removed by means of a histological study before closing the skin defect.

When is Mohs surgery indicated?
In the Clinic we are specialists in Mohs surgery, controlled under the microscope.
It is a technique of great complexity and specialization, but it provides the best results.
This technique is very delicate and requires very specialized personnel. It is applied in cases such as large neoplasms, with a long evolution time or in those with several local recurrences due to incomplete removal.
Most frequent indications:
Do you have any of these diseases?
Mohs surgery may be indicated
How is Mohs surgery performed?
In the department of Dermatology, Mohs surgery is deferred.
This technique is performed in the following steps:
- The tumor is removed and not sutured (covered with gauze). The objective is to leave it open while awaiting histological confirmation by the anatomopathologist that the margins of the tumor removed are tumor free.
- The tissue removed in this first step is fixed with kerosene and the pathologist analyzes it carefully to verify that the tumor margins are free of disease. During this process, the patient is usually admitted while waiting for the result. This process normally takes 36 hours.
- Once the sample has been analyzed, the patient returns to the operating room. If the piece had free margins, the first wound is closed. If there was any remaining tumor, the affected area is removed again, leaving wide margins and fixed in freezing.
- While the patient is still in the operating room, in approximately 30 minutes, the anatomopathologist examines the removed tissue again and checks again if the tumor has been completely eradicated and the wound can now be sutured.
The defect resulting from the removal is "repaired" in the most aesthetic way possible, depending on its magnitude, location, and type of skin....
The definitive appearance is achieved a few months after the removal of the stitches.
Under normal conditions, the average number of stages is from one to three (which usually requires about 2-4 hours until complete healing), although this depends a lot on each particular tumor, its location and whether or not it has been treated previously.
